The Italian Registro delle Imprese is the authoritative source for corporate identity, control structure and filed financial statements. An extract from this register names the directors, lists the shareholders with their percentage interests, and records every amendment to the articles of association since incorporation. Control — who holds voting rights, who sits on the board, and under what mandate — is readable from the extract directly.
The register is administered by the local Chamber of Commerce (Camera di Commercio) for the province of the company's registered seat. Access is centralised through the national portal Telemaco, operated by InfoCamere. The extract is a public document. What the extract does not show is addressed in the section below.

The UBO register has restricted access following CJEU C-37/20. Source: Registro delle Imprese / CJEU · verified 2026-09-01Every Italian company — società per azioni (S.p.A.), società a responsabilità limitata (S.r.l.), and their variants — must register with the Chamber of Commerce of the province where its registered office is located. The register is a public legal record, not an administrative database.
The standard extract (visura camerale ordinaria) contains:
For S.p.A. companies, shareholder identity is not recorded in the register in the same way: shares are held through a securities account system. The register records the total capital structure, not individual shareholders below the disclosure threshold.
A historical extract (visura storica) adds every past amendment: changes of address, capital increases, director appointments and resignations, and modifications to the articles. This is the document that reveals the trajectory of control over time.

Retrieval goes through the Telemaco portal operated by InfoCamere. The process requires:
The portal operates in Italian. The search interface accepts Italian-language input. A foreign buyer without an Italian tax code can register, but the billing and interface steps require navigation in Italian.
Delivery is immediate upon payment for standard extracts. Certified paper copies (visura camerale in formato cartaceo) require a separate request to the local Chamber and carry a longer processing time.

Annual accounts (bilanci) filed with the Registro delle Imprese are retrievable through the same Telemaco portal. Italian law requires most companies to file annual accounts within thirty days of shareholder approval. The filed document is the balance sheet, income statement, and notes as approved.
What the filed accounts show: total assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, and the auditor's report where applicable. What they do not show: management accounts, intercompany pricing, or cash flows at the subsidiary level if the company files only a standalone statement.
For groups, the consolidated accounts are filed only if the Italian entity is the parent. A subsidiary of a foreign group files standalone accounts only. The group-level picture requires retrieval from the parent's jurisdiction.

Insolvency proceedings against Italian companies are recorded in two places: the Registro delle Imprese itself (for the formal opening of proceedings) and the Registro Procedure Concorsuali, a dedicated insolvency register accessible through the Ministry of Justice portal.
A negative result in either register does not guarantee the absence of a filed petition. The period between filing and formal registration creates a gap. For time-sensitive transactions, the relevant court file must be checked directly.
Enforcement records (protesti, liens on shares) are partially visible in the Registro delle Imprese. A lien on an S.r.l. quota is registered and appears in the extract. A lien on S.p.A. shares is recorded in the securities account system, not in the company register.

The Registro delle Imprese records what has been filed. It does not verify what is true.
Shareholder identity for S.p.A. companies. The register does not list individual shareholders of a joint-stock company. Shares are held through Euronext Securities Milan (formerly Monte Titoli) for listed companies, or through private securities accounts for unlisted ones. The register shows capital structure, not ownership by name below the mandatory disclosure threshold.
Beneficial ownership. Italy implemented the EU UBO register under Legislative Decree 231/2007 as amended. The beneficial ownership section of the Registro delle Imprese exists. Following the CJEU judgment in C-37/20 (November 2022), public access to UBO data has been restricted. Access now requires demonstration of a legitimate interest. The standard visura camerale does not include UBO data. A separate request procedure applies, and its outcome is not guaranteed for a foreign applicant.
Nominee structures. If a shareholder of record is a holding company registered in another jurisdiction, the Italian register shows that holding company as the shareholder. It does not show who controls the holding company. The chain stops at the Italian border.
Timeliness. The register reflects what has been filed, not what has occurred. A director change takes effect legally on the date of the shareholders' resolution. It appears in the register only after filing, which may take days or weeks. An extract dated today may not reflect a change made last week.
What this means for the order. The extract establishes the formal control structure as recorded. It does not establish the economic control structure, the identity of the ultimate beneficial owner, or the current state of affairs if recent changes have not yet been filed.
Two situations produce a discrepancy worth noting.
Register versus articles of association. The extract summarises the articles. The full text of the articles, including any shareholder agreement provisions incorporated by reference, requires retrieval of the filed deed (atto costitutivo and statuto). These are available through Telemaco as separate documents. A summary in the extract may omit veto rights, tag-along clauses, or supermajority requirements that are present in the full text.
Register versus filed accounts. The share capital recorded in the register is the registered capital. The equity shown in the filed accounts reflects accumulated results. A company may show registered capital of one figure and negative equity in the accounts. Both are correct; they measure different things. Treating registered capital as a proxy for financial standing is an error the extract itself does not prevent.

What is a visura camerale? A visura camerale is the official extract from the Italian Registro delle Imprese. It is a digitally signed document issued by the Chamber of Commerce through the InfoCamere / Telemaco system. It records the current legal status of a company: directors, shareholders (for S.r.l.), share capital, registered address, and corporate purpose. It is the primary document for verifying corporate identity and formal control structure in Italy.
Does the extract show the beneficial owner? The standard visura camerale does not include beneficial ownership data. Italy maintains a UBO register as part of the Registro delle Imprese, but access has been restricted following the CJEU judgment of November 2022. A separate request with a statement of legitimate interest is required. The outcome of that request is not guaranteed for a foreign applicant.
How long does retrieval take? A standard digital extract through Telemaco is delivered immediately upon payment. A historical extract is also available immediately in digital form. Certified paper copies from the local Chamber of Commerce take longer; the timeline depends on the specific Chamber.
Is the extract in Italian? Yes. The Registro delle Imprese issues documents in Italian. An English-language summary or translation is not provided by the registry. The Extended tier of this service includes an English-language summary of findings.
Can a foreign company order an extract directly? Yes. The Telemaco portal is accessible from outside Italy. Registration requires a valid email address and billing details. The interface and the document are in Italian. A foreign buyer without an Italian tax code can register and order; the process requires navigation in Italian.
What does the extract not show for an S.p.A.? For a società per azioni, the register does not list individual shareholders. Shares are held through securities accounts. The register shows the total capital structure and any shareholders who have filed a disclosure above the applicable threshold. Individual shareholder identity below that threshold is not visible in the register.
What is the difference between the ordinary and historical extract? The ordinary extract (visura ordinaria) shows the current state: present directors, current shareholders, current address. The historical extract (visura storica) shows every change since incorporation: all past directors, all past shareholders, every amendment to the articles, every change of address. For a control analysis, the historical extract is the relevant document.
